Washington Oaks Park + Beach
About an hour and a half north of Orlando is a state park well worth the drive. Unlike many parks within an easy trek from the city, this park has two different scenic elements next to each other: a garden and a beach.
While beachfront views are common for us, none close by are quite like the beach at Washington Oaks Park. It’s full of sculptured coquina rock that extends three-quarters of a mile. Varieties of shapes and sizes pile on top of one another, with plenty of hiding places for crabs, snails and decorative anemones.
The beach, in my experience is usually pretty desolate, making it a great destination for getting out while steering clear of crowds at other beaches.
HOW DO I GET THERE: Set your GPS for the Washington Oaks State Park. As you come to the entrance for the park, you’ll see another road (with no sign) directly across the street. That’s your access to the beach. There is a small parking lot (paid parking $5) with a ramp leading up to the beach.
When you walk down to the beach, look to your left and you’ll see the coquina in the distance.
WASHINGTON OAKS GARDENS
Once you’ve gotten your fill of the beach you can drive across the street to enter the gardens. Your beach parking covers the cost of entrance into the gardens, just show your ticket.
The property (425 acres) was donated to the State by a couple who had made it their winter retreat. They built a house facing the Matanzas River, where now you’ll see families fishing on their visits.
There are lush walking trails lined with beautiful live oaks and magnolia trees, a rose garden, and a well-manicured formal gardens.
If hiking or biking is something you want to do while you are here, the maps show the trails that jet off from the main gardens you can enjoy. There are also picnic areas if you pack a lunch (there’s also a Publix not too far if you need some last minute items).
If hiking or biking isn’t on your agenda, plant lovers will still love the gardens. It’s peaceful and truly filled with beautiful sights.
